What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, refers to computer systems designed to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making (International Organization for Standardization, 2024; Michigan Tech, 2024; Stryker & Kavlakoglu, 2024). Modern AI systems use algorithms and large datasets to recognize patterns, make predictions, and improve performance over time. These capabilities have made AI an essential tool in industries ranging from healthcare and finance to education and customer service, enabling machines to analyze complex information and support human decision-making (Rose, 2024). AI contains many subfields, including machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, each applying different approaches to interpret data and generate actionable outputs (Floridi, 2024).
How AI Works
At the core of AI is the ability to learn from data. Machine learning models are trained on large datasets to identify patterns and correlations, which they can then apply to new situations. Deep learning, a subset of machine learning, uses artificial neural networks to process information in layers, mimicking some aspects of human brain function (Rose, 2024). The more data AI systems are exposed to, the more accurate and refined their predictions or responses become. This learning process is recurring, often requiring constant feedback, refinement, and human oversight to ensure quality and reduce bias (Papagiannidis et al., 2023). Understanding how AI works helps users evaluate the technology’s strengths and limitations, which is crucial to adopt responsibly.
What is Generative AI?
Generative AI is a subset of AI that produces entirely new content, including text, images, audio, video, and code. These systems learn patterns from large datasets and combine them in novel ways (Aldous et al., 2024; Wernersson et al., 2023). For example, AI language models can draft essays, write marketing copy, or create dialogue, while AI design tools can generate graphics or layouts for digital media. Generative AI has become an important collaborator in creative industries, helping humans work more efficiently while expanding the possibilities of design and content production (Floridi, 2024).
However, generative AI also presents ethical and practical challenges. Because it relies on existing data, outputs from the technology may reproduce copyrighted work or misinformation if not properly supervised (Luccioni, 2023; Papagiannidis et al., 2023). Despite these concerns, many experts view generative AI as a tool to augment human creativity rather than replace it (Aldous et al., 2024).
AI in Daily Life
AI is no longer limited to research labs or tech companies, but it is now integrated into daily life in many ways. Recommendation algorithms on streaming platforms, chatbots providing customer service, and predictive text on mobile devices all rely on AI to enhance user experience (Rose, 2024). In sports, AI is used for performance analysis, crowd management, and scheduling, while in business, it supports decision-making by analyzing large datasets quickly and efficiently (Gmyrek et al., 2023). These real-world applications demonstrate AI’s ability to improve efficiency, accessibility, and personalization across a wide range of industries.
By understanding AI’s underlying principles, capabilities, and limitations, users and organizations can better leverage these tools responsibly, anticipate risks, and maximize benefits. This foundation is necessary before exploring AI’s broader societal effects, including misinformation, jobs, and creativity.
